Emma KnightClinical Nurse Specialist Immunology, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham

After completing a Biology degree and working as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist and in a Clinical Trials Unit, I finally found the career for me; Nursing. I completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing from City University in London. My nursing experience has been varied, working in Cardiothoracic and Critical Care but I was fortunate to find the area of nursing which I find fascinating; Immunology and Allergy.

My training has been predominately in Cardiff where I was a Band 6 covering both Immunology and Allergy in the Adult Service. I was fortunate to progress my career as an opportunity became available to set up and develop the Paediatric Immunology Service in Cardiff. Due to relocation I am now the Lead Immunology Nurse in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where I am enjoying the challenge of developing and setting up a new service. I am also enjoying branching out and developing my research interest in the diverse and emerging field of secondary immunodeficiency.

During my time in Cardiff I completed my MSc in Nursing. My dissertation was a case review, published in the Journal of Clinical Pathology, describing how we were the first centre in the world to administer hyaluronidase prior to a subcutaneous immunoglobulin infusion, enabling infusion of 300mls into one site.

My passion is research and furthering my knowledge within the challenging but fascinating field of nursing.
